Maltis Edward Glover

June 8, 1932 – December 25, 2020

BAILEY – Maltis Edward Glover, 88, of the Mount Pleasant Community passed away Friday, Christmas Day.  A graveside service will be held at the Bailey Cemetery on Saturday, January 2nd at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Butch Gordon officiating.

Family and friends can visit from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday, January 1st at Shingleton Funeral Home, 2413 West Nash Street NW, Wilson and other times at the Glover home. 

Ed is now healed and in his heavenly home with his Lord.  And what better way to say “Happy Birthday” to Jesus than face to Face.  To everyone that knew him, he was one of the most gentle, loving, kind, humble, and giving men our Good Lord ever put on this earth.  He loved his family and was affectionately called BigPa by his precious grandchildren and great grandsons. 

This “gentle giant” was born on June 8, 1932, to Maltis Washington and Lora Manning Glover in the Mt. Pleasant Community.  Edward Glover (who later in high school became known as “Poley” because of his tall, skinny build) worked on the family farm.  He attended Mt. Pleasant Elementary School until 8th grade and then went to Bailey High School where he graduated in 1950.  He was called to serve his country in the Korean War where he served proudly and selflessly for over 2 years. He was hit by shrapnel and while being carried out on a stretcher, one of the carriers stepped on a land mine.  Because this soldier’s injuries were worse than Poley’s, he traded places with the soldier and helped carry him to safety.

In April 1955, Ed was honorably discharged from the Army and went back to farming with his father.  He dated Ann Medlin for over a year and on August 31, 1956, they were married.  In 1958, he worked for a short while at Colonial Food Stores in Raleigh and then began driving a Trailways Bus.  As a result of driving for Trailways, the young family moved to Salisbury, MD; however, they only stayed there a few months as they did not like being that far north.  Ann told Edward if they could just move back to Mt. Pleasant, she would top and sucker tobacco for the rest of her life.  Needless to say, they came back and settled again in Mt. Pleasant where Ann got her share of topping and suckering tobacco.  While farming in 1958, Ed co-managed Glover’s Supermarket (present day Kountry Kwik Pik), where many, many local customers were served.

Always advocating for the folks in Southern Nash County, Ed was a pillar in the Mt. Pleasant Community and was one of the founding members of the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Rescue Squad.  He served as a volunteer with the rescue squad beginning in 1967 until he became the first full-time paid member in the early 70’s.  He helped coordinate, cook, and serve many, many delicious rescue bar-b-que and chicken dinners throughout the years which helped raise money for the Rescue Squad to better serve the surrounding areas.  He mentored many a young man and woman who wanted to become a part of the medical service community.  And for 36 years until he retired in 2003, he committed his time and energy serving people in need throughout Southern Nash County, particularly in the Mt. Pleasant, Bailey, and Middlesex areas.

For those who knew him best, Ed was very witty and had a great sense of humor and always loved to play practical jokes on different folks, especially his buddies at the Rescue Squad.  He was also known to be a great Spades card player and always enjoyed the comradery with all who joined the games at his neighbor’s place.

In his “spare” time in 1987, as a Korean War Veteran, he helped start the Southern Nash Memorial VFW Post 4147 in Mt. Pleasant.  This provided all local veterans and their wives (auxiliary) a place to meet and fellowship and be a part of a National Organization honoring our veterans and remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom.  As a dedicated member, Ed served in various VFW officer positions throughout the years.

Even though Ed retired from the Rescue Squad, he continued to serve on the Rescue’s Board and provided guidance until the county took over the emergency services later.  Upon retirement, he and Ann had stayed active through gardening and traveling on some bus tours which they thoroughly enjoyed.  Ed was instrumental in helping form Mt. Pleasant Inc. where he served on the Board with others.  He continued working and helping in the Mt. Pleasant Community through the weekly Sr. Citizen’s breakfasts and exercise classes.  He was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 2014 by Nash County Senior Citizens for his work at the Mt. Pleasant Center.  He had given tirelessly to the community where he was born and raised and continued to call home until about 2 years ago when his health wouldn’t let him do so much anymore.  He still loved seeing people and riding around looking at all the fields and crops of his fellow neighbors.

Ed was a true USA patriot and had served his country with pride.  He had received several medals and awards in the service including a purple heart.  He always enjoyed going to Southern Nash Middle School around Veterans Day to share with the students what it meant to be a Veteran and the importance of respecting our country and flag.  He instilled that same pride in his children, grandchildren, and great grandsons.

Ed is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Ann Medlin Glover; daughters, Debra Ann Glover of Whitakers, Kathy Glover Merrill and husband Michael of Bailey, Wanda Glover Price of Wilson and fiancée, David Anderson of Durham; his grandchildren, Lora Wiggs Prevatte and husband Darren of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Mallory Wiggs Harvey and husband Steve of Wilmington, and Eric Edward Price of Wilson; his great grandsons, Brayden and Maddox Prevatte; several nephews, nieces, cousins, and special family friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maltis W. and Lora M. Glover; his sister, Audrey June Glover; his sons-in-law, Michael “Turtle” Kelly and William “Bill” Babb, Jr.; and many special family and friends.

His family has always been proud of him and feel very blessed to have had him as their Soulmate, Daddy, and BigPa.
