Nicholas Judge Obituary

Nicholas Peter Judge, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on September 25, 2025, in Wilson, North Carolina. He was born on May 29, 1950, in Ames, Iowa, but built his life and family in Chicago, Illinois.

Nick married the love of his life, Karen Love Judge in 1978, with whom he shared a devoted partnership. While they met in the workplace, their story is not a traditional one; Nick was investigating her employer Harris Bank for discrimination. Thankfully, their relationship lasted much longer than the court case. Together they raised sons Peter and David who, with their families, were Nick’s pride and joy. He was a loving father-in-law to Caroline and Lauren, and a cherished grandfather, affectionately known as "Papa" to Abigail, Edward, Eleanor, and Elizabeth. He treasured time spent with his grandchildren above all. His family, and the love they have for him, will continue to grow after his passing. Born the seventh of seven children, he is also survived by older brother Charles, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A dedicated scholar, Nick was a member of the 1972 graduating class at Yale College where he studied History – which remained a passion for the remainder of his life – and later earned his Juris Doctorate from DePaul University Law School in 1986. His professional journey reflected his commitment to justice and equity, working at the U.S. Departments of Defense, Labor and later Treasury, the University of Chicago, and various companies where he specialized in discrimination and employment law.

Nick’s life was enriched by his intellectual pursuits, charitable spirit, and religious faith. A devout Catholic, he found great meaning in his faith and lived his love for God through constant demonstration of humility and good works. He regularly volunteered his time and resources to local charities, especially Saturday mornings at the local food bank. Nick’s many longstanding friendships frequently dated back to his school years, and his loyal companionship will be missed by many.

He regularly enjoyed playing bridge with friends and taking long walks with his many rescue dogs over the years; he was a proud supporter of American Brittany Rescue for more than two decades. An avid reader, he delighted in books about history and politics, always eager to learn and share his insights – and especially in debating his sons over a bottle of Malbec.

An uncommonly kind man to any he encountered, Nick’s legacy of compassion, integrity, and inquisitiveness will live on in the hearts of his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. As a testament, the Harris case earned him not only his future wife, but also “employee of the month” by the Department of Labor. In the official citation, he was recognized for “his legal expertise as an attorney, combined with a unique brand of easy charm spiced with good humor, has endeared him to all.” Sometimes the bureaucrats get it right.

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free!

I follow the plan God laid for me.

I saw His face, I heard His call,

I took His hand and left it all…

I could not stay another day,

To love, to laugh, to work or play;

Tasks left undone must stay that way.

And if my parting has left a void,

Then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss…

Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.

My life’s been full, I’ve savored much:

Good times, good friends, a loved-one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief –

Don’t shorten yours with undue grief.

Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,

Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.
